How to Create Your Own Carpool Map Using Google My Maps

Setting up a carpool map using Google My Maps allows parents, students, and staff to coordinate rideshares efficiently. This interactive tool helps families visualize carpool routes, identify nearby participants, and reduce transportation hassles.

Step 1: Create a New Map

  1. Go to Google My Maps and sign in.
  2. Click “Create a new map”.
  3. At the top left, click “Untitled map”, then give it a name (e.g., "School Carpool Map") and a description.

Step 2: Add Locations for Carpool Participants

  1. Use the search bar to find and add carpool participant addresses.
  2. Click the “Add marker” tool (📍) and drop a pin for each participant's pickup/drop-off location.
  3. Label each marker with the family name, student name, or carpool group name.

Step 3: Create Carpool Routes

  1. Click the “Draw a Line” tool (🚗) to map out driving routes.
  2. Use different colors to differentiate carpool groups.
  3. Add estimated travel times or notes about meeting points.

Step 4: Customize Your Map

✅ Change the base map style (e.g., satellite view, terrain, or simplified map).

✅ Organize different groups using layers (e.g., Grade-Level Carpools, Neighborhood Carpools).

✅ Add icons or colors to indicate drivers, passengers, or pick-up hubs.

Step 5: Share Your Carpool Map

  1. Click “Share” and choose whether the map is:
    • Public (anyone with the link can view/edit).
    • Private (only specific emails can access).
  2. Send the link via email, text, or embed it in your Onespot school app for easy access.

📌 Tip: If you want parents to edit their locations, enable “Anyone with the link can edit.”

Step 6: Embed the Map in Your Onespot App

  1. Open your Onespot Admin Panel.
  2. Create a new custom screen (or add it to an existing page).
  3. Select Web Link and paste the Google My Maps share link.
